Win public education funds for your favorite fire department by spreading the word that stops the spread of fire!

The Close Before You Doze campaign has helped educate millions of people about the critical impact that closing your bedroom door can have in stopping the spread of a fire and ultimately saving lives. This year, we want your help spreading the word. We are looking for individuals or groups to create their own video that educates viewers on the importance of closing bedroom doors before going to bed at night in case of a home fire.

Participants in this contest will play a valuable role in helping promote fire safety in their neighborhoods, and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) will donate funds to winners’ favorite fire departments.

Here are some examples of what you can submit:

  • If you’re musically inclined, write a song about fire safety and film yourself singing it.
  • If you want to choreograph an interpretive dance, have at it.
  • If you have graphic design skills, make a comic-book style animated short underscoring the importance of fire safety.
  • If you are pet-obsessed, your pets can be the star and tell people to Close Before You Doze.
  • If you do a great Alec Baldwin impression, submit your best take of “always be closing.”

Whatever your talents are, we’d love to see your creative interpretation of getting this life-saving message to people.

  • Paste in the link to your video on Youtube here
  • Title of your video that is displayed for voters
  • Briefly describe your video. This description will be displayed to the voters.
  • Please enter the name of the fire department you’d like us to donate to if you win – This can either be your local fire department or one of your choosing. If no fire department is selected, UL will identify your nearest fire department based on your city of residence.

FAQ

The contest is open to legal U.S. residents of the United States and the District of Columbia, thirteen (13) years of age or older. If under the age of majority in the state in which you reside, you must have your parent or legal guardian enter the video on your behalf.
Create a video that’s less than three minutes long and includes the Close Before You Doze message. You can also include other fire safety messages, such as:
  • Have working smoke alarms on every level of the home, inside and outside of every sleeping room.
  • Have a fire escape plan and practice it regularly, but if you cannot escape, keep a closed door between you and the fire.
  • When you escape a fire, close the door behind you to help prevent the fire from spreading.

Submissions will be accepted right here on CloseYourDoor.org/contest from July 16-August 31.
All qualifying submissions will be published on CloseYourDoor.org/contest, and the public vote will determine the top eight. Entrants will receive information about how the public voting process works, links to assets you can use to help promote your video (e.g. social copy, graphics, etc.), and a unique link to your video so you can share and solicit votes. A panel of UL representatives will select the winners from among the top eight.
Winners will receive a donation in their name to their favorite fire department or fire department of their choosing.
  • Winner – $25,000
  • Runner-up – $15,000
  • 2nd runner-up – $10,000
Plus five additional entrants will be recognized with an honorable mention and a $5,000 donation to their favorite fire department
