Fighting Fire with Science

The Close Your Door safety initiative comes as the result of over 10 years of research by the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI). After proving that a closed door could potentially save lives in a fire, UL FSRI has committed to share this finding with the world.

The Difference a Door Makes

In tests, a closed door made a potentially life-saving difference in a fire.

Closed Door Room

  • More Survivable Temp: < 100°
  • Livable 18% Oxygen Level
  • Less Toxic Carbon Monoxide Levels: 100 PPM CO (parts per million of Carbon Monoxide)

Opened Door Room

  • Less Survivable Temp: > 1,000°
  • Low 8% Oxygen Level
  • Extremely Toxic Carbon Monoxide Levels: 10,000 PPM CO

Close your bedroom door at night

About half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep. The bedroom door is a barrier that could save your life.*

Don’t Forget the Front Door!

Even when exiting a burning structure, close the door behind you. It will cut off the oxygen supply and may stop fire’s growth.
